Om tjänsten

We are looking for a project assistant to help develop advanced flow control solutions for sustainable wind-assisted ship propulsion About us  The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research across all transport modes to achieve sustainable technological solutions. We offer and contribute to bachelor’s and master’s programs in areas like Shipping, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Automotive, and Mechanical Engineering. M2 fosters strong collaboration between academia, industry, and society for effective knowledge transfer. With an international environment, outstanding research, and world-class education, M2 consists of seven engineering and maritime science divisions, plus an administration and support division. Information about the project Motor sailing ships play a vital role in meeting IMO’s emission reduction targets by reducing engine power, fuel consumption, and emissions. Combined with CO2-neutral fuels, they offer a path to fossil-free shipping. Hard wing sails, a common wind propulsor, require advanced sheeting strategies to prevent stall—a sudden thrust loss due to airflow separation. This project aims to develop an active flow control (AFC) system to enhance sail performance and mitigate stall effects. We are offering a project assistant position in active flow control for wingsail performance. The goal is to develop techniques to optimize airflow over wingsails, hulls, and superstructures, enhancing aerodynamics and reducing vibrations in unsteady metocean conditions. Previous research highlights the importance of stall conditions for sail performance and safety, while also revealing the complexity of airflow around sails and ship structures. Job description This position will support senior researchers in setting up and performing simulations and analyse the result for preliminary flow analysis and design of the AFC system. The flow around sails close to and beyond stall will be studied and characterised using scale resolved CFD (PANS and LES). Features of the flow control system should be developed that are effective in a range of flow conditions for the vessel. Contract terms This is a temporary employment of maximum one year. Qualifications To qualify, you must have: • At least a BSc in a relevant field (MSc preferred) • Ability to work independently • Strong interest in fluid dynamics and experience with high-quality simulations • Willingness to collaborate in interdisciplinary projects • Strong communication skills to discuss and present work to diverse audiences • Motivation, curiosity, and a desire to develop skills further Additionally, the position requires: • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English • Ability to plan and organize work effectively What we offer Chalmers provides a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg.  Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
